Jean-Jacques Pagès

Trois octobasses pour l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (Québec)

Trois octobasses pour l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (Québec)

To satisfy a triple commission from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Jean-Jacques Pagès reconstructed and modernized a legendary instrument created by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume in 1851: the octobass. The lowest-pitched bowed instrument. Due to its imposing size and unsuitable mechanics, this octobass had been silent for over a century. It has since regained its place in the orchestra.
